What is Nashi Pear?

The Nashi pear is a round fruit with the shape and size of an apple, hence the pear is also colloquially known as the apple pear. They have the texture and bite of an apple, but the sweetness and taste of a pear. The pear is white on the inside and has a small core. Additionally, the pear has a thin gold-coloured skin.

The pears can be useful in treating inflammation of the mucous membranes, colitis, chronic gallbladder disorders, arthritis and gout. The pears can also help lower high blood pressure, control the levels of cholesterol in the blood and increase uric acid levels. The Nashi pear is an excellent source of nutritional fibres and Vitamin C.

Growth of Nashi Pear

Even though, the Nashi pear is nowadays also cultivated at several locations in East-Asia, the pear first originated in China.

The Nashi pear can also be cultivated in the Netherlands, without problems. Unfortunately, not that many professional cultivators have chosen to do so yet. Nevertheless, the pear can be found in many private gardens. The Nashi pear does need some warmth to fully ripen here in the Dutch climate. Now, biologically cultivated Nashi pears are also available in the Netherlands.
