Wat is avocado

What is an avocado?

Avocados are round to pear-shaped fruits that have a relatively hard skin. The colour of the skin varies from green to almost black. The yellowish-green flesh of the avocado has a creamy, nutty flavour. The flesh is high in fat, with a fat content that can reach up to 30%. However, these are largely monounsaturated fats, primarily oleic acid (healthy fats). This means avocados are incredibly good for you!

Ready to Eat

There is also a ready-to-eat variety of our avocados available. These avocados are especially selected by our growers for specific characteristics, which ensures that the avocado ripens well and has a delicious flavour. Ask your salesperson about them!

Waar komt avocado vandaan?

Where do avocados come from?

Avocados originated in Mexico. We import our avocados from all around the world, primarily from Peru, Chile, South Africa, Colombia, Mexico and Dominican Republic.

Hoe bewaar je avocado

How do you store avocados?

Before selling, avocados must be stored in a cool, dry place at 10°C and at a relative humidity (RH) of 85 to 90%.

We recommend that consumers store avocados in a fruit bowl, out of direct sunlight. Do not store unripe avocados in the refrigerator because this disrupts the post-ripening process.

If you store your avocados in a fruit bowl together with apples, pears or bananas, this will promote the post-ripening process. If you would like to store your avocados for longer or use them slightly later, then store them separately from other fruit, in your pantry, for example.

A ripe avocado will feel soft when you lightly press around the base of the fruit. If you want to store ripe (ready-to-eat) avocados for longer, then you can put them in the refrigerator, but for no more than a few days.

Hoe eet je avocado

How do you eat avocados?

Avocados are delicious as is, with just a little salt and pepper. They also add a wonderful flavour to salads, soups and sauces. You can also add slices of avocado to your sandwiches to make them even more flavourful. Avocado can even be used as a butter substitute on your bread!
